US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

William Anthony Burke from Mason City, Iowa enlisted in the Marine Corps 28 January, 1942 from California. Completed recruit training in the 13th Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. 6 March, 1942 assigned to Headquarters Squadron, 2nd Marine Air Wing (2nd MAW), NAS San Diego, CA. 28 March, 1942 embarked ship at San Diego for overseas.

4 April, 1942 assigned to Headquarters and Service Squadron 21, Marine Air Group 21 (MAG-21), 2nd MAW, MCAS Ewa, Hawaii. 11 April, 1942 embarked the USS William Ward Burrows (AP-6) at Pearl Harbor.

18 April, 1942 arrived at Midway Island. Assigned to Ground Echelon of Marine Fighter Squadron 221 (VMF 221), Marine Air Group 22 (MAG-22), 2nd MAW. Killed in Action 4 May, 1942 Midway Island during Japanese Air Attack during the Battle of Midway.

Buried at Sea.
